Description:
Resting travelers near Drachenfels - Signed l.r. - Oil on panel, 80.5 x 60.3 cm - N.B.: The Drachenfels (Dragon's rock) is a dead volcano on the bank of the river Rhine, one of the seven peaks of the Siebengebirge, between Königswinter and Bad Honnef, Germany. Situated on the top of the Drachenfels are the ruins of a castle of the same name. Somewhat lower situated is the Drachenburg castle dating from the late 19th century. The peak with its height of 321 meters is an important tourist attraction due to the Siegfried legend, the castle and the keep, but especially because of the spectacular view from the keep of the river Rhine.

Johannes Hermanus Barend was the student of his father, the marine painter H. Koekkoek Sen. Detailed seascapes and the life in and around fisherman's villages were his predominant subjects. His style of painting was primarily Romantic, but later he developed a looser style.
