"The United States Gunboat "Eutaw". Builtby John J. Abrahams & Son Baltimore, Md. Engine by Haxlehurst& Weigan Vulcan Works, Baltimore, Md. Hull Length…240 feet.Breadth…35 feet. Depth 12ft. 974 Tons. Engine. Diameter of Cylinder59 inches. Inclined L.P. Stroke 8 feet 9 inches."
NewYork: Endicott & Co., 1863. Color lithograph with additionalhand-coloring. Signature in lithograph: "C. Parsons, '63". Sheetsize: 23 x 25 1/4 in.
The Eutaw was one of twenty-seven double-ender, paddle wheelgunboats of the "Sassacus class" (named for the vessel of that namewhich rammed the Confederate Albermarle). A lithograph of a sistership, the Chenango, was also published by Endicott & Co. Shewas built of wood in 1862 and fitted with eight guns. The duty ofthese rams was to open up and protect the Union ports and guard theriver traffic in the Gulf and along the Mississippi. She was brokenup in 1867, soon after hostilities ended.
Charles Parsons (1821-1910) British born, spent most of his longlife in America creating superb marine prints and paintings. Muchof his print work was published by the two major New Yorklithography firms: Currier & Ives and Endicott & Co. Hisship portraits are among the finest of the era and demonstrate alove and a profound understanding of boats and life at sea.
