The S.S. "Martha Washington" was built by Russell & Co, PortGlasgow in 1907 for the Austrian company, Unione Austriaca. She wasa 8,145 gross ton ship, with and LOA of 460 feet, two funnels, twomasts, twin screw and a speed of 16 knots. She was fitted toaccommodate 60 first class, 130 second class and 2,000 third classpassengers passengers. The "Martha Washington" was launched onDecember 7th 1907, and she sailed from Glasgow on her maiden voyageto New York on April 16th 1908 She commenced her first passengervoyage from Trieste to Patras, Palermo and New York on May 23rd1908 and on July 18th 1914 commenced her last voyage on thisservice, arriving in New York on 1st August. She then took refugein New York with the outbreak of World War I, and in April 1917 shewas seized by the US authorities and used as a tropp ship for theduration of the war. In 1922 she went to Cosulich Line of Italy andstarted her first sailing from New York to Algiers, Venice andTrieste on December 15th 1922, and on June 27th 1923 she commencedher first voyage from Trieste to Naples, Algiers and New York. Shemade her last Trieste - Naples - Boston - New York crossing inSeptember 1927 and subsequently ran to South America. In 1933 shewant to Lloyd Triestino and was renamed TEL AVIV, and in 1934 wasscrapped at Trieste.
