Description:
Francis Joseph "Wiggs" Kinnaird (British, 1875-1915) The Severn, near Redstone Rocks signed lower right "Wiggs Kinnaird" watercolour 36 x 52cm (14 x 20in) Other Notes: Francis Joseph Kinnaird, known as "Wiggs", was a landscape and figure painter who had had no formal art training but was tutored by his elder brother, Henry John Kinnaird - a noted landscape painter in oils and watercolours. Henry had exhibited works at the Royal Academy from 1886 to 1897. Together they travelled and painted rural scenes in the counties of southern England. In 1900, whilst painting in Worcestershire, Wiggs met his future wife, Mrs Gertrude Cookes, the widow of Thomas Henry Cookes JP, DL, MP for East Worcestershire. They lived at The Old Hill, Astley, near Stourport, Worcestershire, which Wiggs painted in 1901. Tragically, Wiggs' career as an artist was short lived. In 1909 he joined the Staffordshire Militia, 4th Battalion of the South Staffordshire Regiment. At the outbreak of war in 1914, his battalion was stationed in Jersey. In March 1915, he took a draft of 100 men as reinforcements to the 2nd Battalion of the Regiment in France. During his short time at the Front and in the trenches, Wiggs made a number of sketches. On 16th May in the area of Richebourg, north-east of Bethune, following heavy enemy shelling, four Captains were wounded, including Wiggs. After evacuation to the No. 10 Stationary Hospital at St Omar, he was brought back to London for further treatment. Sadly, Wiggs succumbed to his wounds and died at St Agnes Hospital at Grosvenor Gardens on 6th June. He is buried at Astley in Worcestershire. A little discolouration to the upper right-hand corner and creasing to the paper
