LI KERAN (1907-1989) Boys and Buffalo Entitled and signed, with one seal of the artist Scroll, mounted and framed, ink and colour on paper 40 x 32.5 cm (15 3/4 x 12 3/4 in.) 20th Century Purchased directly from the artist in 1957 at an exhibition of Chinese paintings by Li Keran and Guan Liang at the Akademie der K?nste in Berlin, thence by descent. The German publisher Insel-Verlag had published this painting as an art print.

Provenance: private collection, Berlin 李可染 三牛圖 設色紙本 立軸 款識：牛，春夏秋冬汗水流，泥濕透野綠油油。牛，日出耕耘，日落休身，何索五谷给人留。牛，徹夜反芻為金秋。李可染畫。 鈐印：可染、白髮學童、廢畫三千 來源：柏林私人收藏 李可染喜愛畫牛，他不僅對牛的樸實無華、氣宇軒昂的形象與腳踏實地、無私奉獻的品質欽佩不已，更將牛作為人格學習的榜樣， 以至於他將自己的畫室命名為「師牛堂」。他以牧童與牛為題材的畫作，寥寥數筆，便能將牧童的悠然自得和牛的質感動感，惟妙惟肖地表現出來， 形神兼備，充滿生趣和詩意。此幅李可染〈三牛圖〉，正是其牧牛圖中的不可多得的佳作。 李可染畫〈三牛圖〉，依照其習慣，應是從牧童開始，以羊毫筆蘸濃墨，用金錯刀法畫出，線條凝重有力，如錐畫沙。畫牛時先畫牛眼，繼以大筆， 用輕重、乾濕、疾徐的筆法順其體勢將牛頭和身體結構、皮毛質感寫了出來，又如楷書一般，有頓挫地畫出牛腿，然後勾寫牛蹄和尾巴。所畫之牛， 多一筆嫌碎，少一筆不夠，神態生動，天趣自然。該作品雖無年款，但從畫法和書風來看，筆法古拙，遒勁老辣，應為李可染晚年藝術巔峰時期之作。
