For her depictions of horses at work, in pursuit or at rest Lucy Kemp-Welch is considered amongst the greatest British painters of equine life in the period straddling the turn of the last century. She dedicated herself to her art, studying her subject through exhaustive field sketches and oil studies in every manor of location in order to hone her ability.
Born in Bournemouth, she studied under Hubert von Herkomer and in later years took the reins of the art school he established in Bushey. Exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy from 1895 to 1949, Kemp-Welch was a vivacious woman commanding great respect amongst her peers and in a male dominated genre of sports painting often outshone her gentleman counterparts.

Lucy Kemp Welch (British, 1869-1958)
'Black Beauty': a design for the titlepage
monogrammed, pencil, pen and ink,
28 x 20.5cm (11 x 8 1/16in).
Exhibited: David Messum Fine Art, Winter Exhibition 1996,no.82. Anna Sewell was born in Church Plain, Great Yarmouth in 1820. BlackBeauty, her only published work, was written between 1871 and 1877,at Spixworth Road, Old Catton near Norwich. She sold the novel tolocal publisher Jarrolds for £40, and its sales soon brokepublishing records. Although it is now considered a children'sclassic, the story is narrated in the first person as anautobiographical memoir told by a horse named Black Beauty. Heroriginal intended readers were those who worked with horses, andforthrightly taught animal welfare and compassion, as well as howto treat people with kindness, sympathy and respect. Sewell died ofhepatitis in April 1878, five months after the book was published, but lived long enough to see its initial success. She was buried inthe Quaker burial ground at Lammas near Buxton in Norfolk, where awall plaque continues to mark her resting place. Lucy Kemp-Welch is best known for her illustrations for the 1915edition of Black Beauty, although this particular version of thetitle page was not used in the finished copy.
