Description:
Bernhard Keilhau, known as Monsù Bernardo (Helsingör 1624–1687 Rome) A young family from the Savoy with a girl holding the Canzone delle lodi di Madonna Tenerina by Giulio Cesare Croce, oil on canvas, 88 x 119 cm, framed, We are grateful to Prof Mina Gregori, Florence, who has confirmed the painting to be an authentic work by Keilhaus (certificate dated 01.08.2011). We would also like to thank Prof Enrico Lucchese, University of Trieste, for information provided about the text depicted in the painting. The present painting fits seamlessly within Keilhau's oeuvre; the larger works, which retain the format of history painting, and the monumental conception of the figures, are, in particular, something new to northern Italian genre painting. Keilhau's work influenced a whole generation of north Italian artists, such as G. Todeschini Cipper, Giacomo Cerutti and Antonio Amorosi. Large format scenes of simple country life are often represented in Keilhau's oeuvre (see, for instance, his 'Woodseller' in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston). A partial copy of the present painting, of the left-hand side of the image, was auctioned at Bonham's, London on 1 November 2006 as lot 23. Specialist: Dr. Alexander Strasoldo
