Sehr seltenes und frühes botanisches Buch, ursprünglich unter dem Titel "Hortus Britanno-Americanus" bei J. Ryall erschienen, 4 Jahre später in der vorliegenden Ausgabe unter neuem Namen, um es für den europäischen Markt attraktiver zu machen. Catesby hatte sich zunächst 1712-19 und dann 1722-25 in Amerika aufgehalten und in dieser Zeit heimische Pflanzen gesammelt und auf ihre Eignung für das englische Klima untersucht. Die 62 Pflanzenkupfer sind von 1-84 nummeriert (mit Auslassungen); bis auf das erste und letzte Blatt finden sich jeweils 4 Abbildungen auf jeder Tafel. Der O-HLdr.-Einband stark beschädigt, Rücken und Deckelvignette fehlen. Die Seiten fleckig und im Bund gelockert, jedoch unbeschnitten. Provenienz: Aus der Sammlung von Ernst Finken, des letzten Königlich-Preußischen Hofgärtners in Sanssouci; Hilde Finken, Köln und Westerstede; Privatbesitz, Norddeutschland. 17 engraved plates in contemporary colouring, with 62 pictures of plants, 2 pp. cover and dedication, VI pp. preface and table of contents, 41 pp. text. Reissue under new title of the rare botanical work "Hortus Britanno Americanus" which instructs the readers how to cultivate American trees and shrubs in Britain, ending with the observation "...that a small spot of land in America has, within less than a century, furnished England with a greater variety of trees than has been procured from all the other parts of the world for more than a thousand years past".
