Description:
Early 19th century painting of an English Aristocrat, in original frame, info verso about ancestor, 24"h x 20"w sight size, 24 1/2"h x 30"w frame size. Relined and restored. Provenance: The items offered are from the Estate of RICHARD ALFRED CHAMBERS, MD. Dr. Chambers was born in 1923 at the family estate known as "Stoney Ware", located on the banks of the Thames River in the lovely rural English town of Marlow, 30 miles southwest of London. He was the second son of a British petroleum engineer and a Danish mother. His only sibling and older brother John was killed in action during World War II when the Royal Air Force Lancaster bomber he was navigating was shot down by German Luftwaffe fighters off the coast of Holland.Richard and his brother were raised in typical British upper class fashion with nannies, house servants, many dogs and domestic animals in an almost idyllic country setting. Their father was frequently abroad conducting oil exploration for various British petroleum companies, most notably traveling to and living in Mexico, India and Persia (present day Iran) and Russia. He also served the British Foreign Service as an industrial espionage agent on occasion during his travels. Some of the items in the Chambers Collection were acquired by Richard's father Alfred E. Chambers during these travels. The Chambers family enjoyed a long and prestigious history dating back to the Middle Ages. One of Richard's ancestors was a prominent member of the Court of King Henry VIII.Richard attended Winchester, the oldest of Britain's "public schools" (which are actual private preparatory schools), having been founded by Bishop William of Wykeham in 1382 in the town of Winchester. He excelled academically, particularly in Mathematics and Science and upon graduation matriculated at Oxford University where he received Undergraduate, Masters and medical degrees, all with high honors. Too young to serve in the military during WW II, Richard joined the RAF as a medical officer following his medical training and served from 1947-49 doing sophisticated medical research into toxins, most notably the venom of the highly poisonous Banded Krait, a small but deadly snake found in throughout parts of Southeast Asia, particularly Vietnam. The research was both medical and military because the Cold War was underway and the British military wanted to explore all possible defenses against possible Soviet use of toxins as weapons. After his discharge Dr. Chambers became a neurologist and worked in several London hospitals. His work soon attracted the attention of medical authorities in North America and he accepted a fellowship at Boston City Hospital in 1950. At the time BCH was the premiere medical research institution in New England. At BCH he met and married the love of his life, Margaret Doherty of Andover, Massachusetts, who was also doing neurological research under the famous Dr. Joseph Foley and Derek Denny-Brown. The couple later moved to Toronto where Dr. Chambers became the leader of the new neurology department at the Medical School of the University of Toronto. Following Toronto the Chamberses accepted positions at Seton Hall Medical School and then at the Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, where Richard spent almost 40 years. At Jefferson Richard became Vice Dean and Chairman of the Neurology Department and eventually one of the foremost Neurologists in the United States.Richard and Margaret (known as "Marbie"), who predeceased her husband after 46 years of marriage, never had children and were very active in charitable and educational work in Philadelphia. They were patrons of the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music also located in Philadelphia. Dr. Chambers spoke fluent French and Spanish and although he was also fluent in German, he had a lifelong aversion to the language because of his brother's death in WW II. He inherited numerous items of value from his parents and acquired many more during a lifetime which included frequent travel world wide. Although he resided in the United States for 61 years he never relinquished his English citizenship because as he was wont to say "After all, I am British you know". He always said that his idol was Winston Churchill whom he met as a student at Winchester when Winston gave him a ride home during one semester break after the Prime Minister had delivered a speech at Winchester.Distinguished neurologist, scion of a prominent family and patron of the arts, Richard Alfred Chambers was a true British gentleman.
