Description:
KAIPIAINEN, BIRGER (1915-1988)* A LIGHT RELIEF. Multicoloured fruit decoration with ceramic pearls on blue glass. 73x66 cm. Lightframe 87x80 cm. Birger Kaipiainen made this work of art around 1960, for his wife Maggi, when they moved to Kaivopuisto. The glass object was meant for the kitchen window to lighten up grey days. Grey days, however, turned to grief in 1966 when Maggi died of a brain tumour. Shortly after that, friends Timo Sarpaneva and Tarmo Manni, designed a frame of light for the picture in memory of Maggi. In Birger's and his friends' minds Maggi was like the most beautiful bird in paradise and her soul should always fly in the light. The edges of the frame are made out of dark blue painted wood, and on the inside is installed a light that comes from four sides. Birger donated this work of art to his friend Tarmo Manni, who always kept it above his bed. At that time these artists lived intensely and passionately. Tarmo Manni always slept with the relief lightened because he wanted to float in it at night, with Birger and Armi. We friends always heard new versions about these imaginative trips. Tarmo Manni wanted to leave this relief to me when he was still alive, and he left me a beautiful story with it. After his death I have had the pleasure to admire this work of art in my home, but now it is time for it to create new stories in a hopefully larger surrounding.
