Description:
This charming sketch was executed by the Dutch painter Frederick Hendrik Kaemmerer around 1880. It depicts a lady\’\’\’\’s profile slightly from below and with her blond hair pinned up to display the pearl earring in her right ear. Kaemmerer is known for his portraits of elegant ladies who are often dressed in slightly frivolous clothes.

The sketch is in good condition considering its age. There is a fine scratch with minimal traces of retouching on the temple of the sitter. The paint surface shows smaller abrasions and tiny scattered scratch marks. The edges of the cardboard show minor damages, where the frame has rubbed. Verso, the work is illegibly inscribed with pencil and labelled by the framer (P. Havard, Paris). The frame shows traces of age and use and measures 23.5 x 28.5 cm. The cardboard measures 19 x 25 cm.

Frederick Hendrik Kaemmerer (1839-1902)

Born in The Hague, Frederick Hendrik Kaemmerer started his artistic training under Salomon Leonardus Verveer (1813-1876), which was followed by some further training at the studio of the French painter Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) in Paris from 1865. While he initially devoted himself to landscape painting, he specialized later in the depiction of genre scenes from the Directoire period. In addition to his painting, Kaemmerer also produced numerous designs for a Parisian tapestry manufactory. In 1899, he was awarded the silver medal of the Paris Salon. Today, the majority of his works is located in American private collections such as Vanderbilt, Rockefeller and Jay Guld.
