Description:
JONSTON, Jan (1603-75). Histoire naturelle et raisonnée des différens oiseaux qui habitent le globe. Paris: L.C. Desnos, 1773-74. 2 volumes in one, 2° (494 x 320mm). Frontispiece and 84 contemporary hand-coloured engraved plates, the 23 plates in Part I by Nicolas Robert. (Light browning to text leaves, marginal light spotting to plates, old repaired tears to verso of frontispiece and I1.) Brown half calf, spine gilt. Provenance: L. Mostes, Lyon (stamps). A FINE CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLOURED COPY of Jonston's reissue of Robert's work. The colouring of the present set of plates is of a uniformly high standard. According to the title the work is intended as a companion volume to Merian's Histoire des Insectes et Plantes. The first part contains a reissue of most of the plates from Robert's two works on birds in the royal menagerie at Versailles, Receuil... and Suite des Oyseaux les plus rares, both originally published in Paris in 1676. Anker 238; Nissen IVB 484; Wood p. 410.
