Lot Notes
A member of the famous Swedish artist group Halmstadgruppen,Sven Jonson was one of his country's first direct links to theinternational movements of Cubism and Surrealism. Embodying his owndistinct combination of these, he was not merely interested incopying the French avant-garde masters, but sought to incorporatethe particularity of his native region into his works. Above all,Jonson sought to incorporate the 'salty light' of his Nordic town, frequently expressed with a slightly blue-green colour. This isexemplified in
Kors mot Blatt
, where the blue hues arematched by earthy brown colours to convey an almost naturalisticimpression despite the pure geometrical shapes depicted. Blue wasJonson's preferred colour, but also the colour he found the mostdifficult of all to work with. There is a hypnotic quality to thework whereby what at first glance appears to be an entirelyabstract composition slowly begins to give way to particularcontent. Such illusory readings are supported by what appears to bea play of reflections on the pictorial surface, with the whitesquares at the top left and towards the bottom right giving theimpression of viewing the work through a glass pane. Invoking lightand shadow, flatness and depth, Jonson's works are highlyatmospheric. Always carefully executed in terms of paint strokes, composition and colour scheme, they are more formally restrainedthan his peers in Halmstadgruppen, and both his Cubist andSurrealist pieces characteristically display a harmony which wasrare for his contemporaries - nationally as well asinternationally.
