NikolaKusovac, Paja Jovanovic, Belgrade City Museum2010, S 193. Paul Joanovitch wasborn in Vršac, formerly southern Hungary and today Serbia.He studied at the Vienna Academy from 1876 to 1883 under K. L.Müller. From there he sent his first painting to the art society inBudapest, earning him a Hungarian state scholarship. Likehis teacher, he painted oriental images, inVienna and later in Munich. During the late 19th century he paintedscenes of the Serbian uprising for King Alexander of Serbia. Backin Vienna, his main interest lay in paintingportraits, amongst which is a picture of Emperor FrancisJoseph I. Joanovitch exhibited in Vienna, Munich andBerlin and today his works can be found in museums inBelgrade, Budapest, London, Munich andVienna. (Cf. Thieme-Becker, Leipzig 1926, Vol.XIX, p. 21.) PAUL JOANOVITCH (Serbia/Austria, 1859-1957)THE RESTING SENTINEL. Oil on wood panel scene shows a MiddleEastern man smoking a long pipe seated on a bench with stucco andbrick wall background. He is in fancy attire wearing two pistols atwaistline and hung on a hook behind him is his rifle and fancyaccessories. Signed lower right. Housed in an Eastlake gilt andebonized frame with gilt wood artist plaque. On the reverse of thepanel is a Plaza Art Galleries, New York City label and a partiallabel "From the Collection of Mr. & Mrs. Tony Andress". Alarger version of this scene was sold at Christie's, New York in2005. SIZE: 16-1/2" x 10-1/4". CONDITION: Very good. 9-99001(40,000-60,000)
