Description:
Lot 16 Johan Laurentz Jensen Danish, 1800-1856 Gloxinia, Dahlia, Pelargonium and Ivy leaves on a Brown Marble Ledge , 1836 Signed J. L. Jensen. and dated 1836. (lr) Oil on panel 5 x 7 1/4 inches (12.7 x 18.5 cm) Provenance: Private collection Jensen, a Danish still-life painter, looked closely for inspiration to the works in this genre by Dutch seventeenth-century artists such as Jan van Huysum. He also studied the art of French and Belgian masters, especially the Belgian painters Gerard and Corneille van Spaendonck. Jensen's deft assimilation of these traditions into his own distinctive mastery of flower painting gave him the designation of father of Danish flower painting. This image of mixed cut blooms in an informal arrangement displays his delicate and highly refined style. He used fluid brushwork to produce soft, luminous forms, the colorful flowers serving as a foil to the crisply defined leaves. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC Estimate $3,000-5,000 Minor warp to panel. Frame rubbing. Scattered spots of inpainting along the edges. No further apparent restoration. Any condition statement is given as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Doyle New York shall have no responsibility for any error or omission.
