Description:
Egill Jacobsen, b. Copenhagen 1910, d. s.p. 1998 Composition, 1967. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 70 x 108 cm. "Thirty seconds that last five-and-a-half hours". This was the newspaper headline on Sunday 24 December 1967. The title refers to Hagen Hasselbalch and Ingolf Boisens documentary, which on the same day documented the creation of one of Egill Jacobsens colourful mask compositions. The entire process took five-and-a-half hours. But, at the speed it is shown in the film, it lasts only thirty seconds. Thus, Egill Jacobsens brush strokes are transformed into a rapid visual conjuring feat that gives the observer a unique insight into how the painting came into being. First the thin strokes on the canvas, then the actual basic drawing; after that the first base colours, and finally, the various top colours are added. This process culminates in a colouristically saturated mask composition that demonstrates the steady hand and magical mask universe of Egill Jacobsen. Apart from shedding light on the painting processes used by Egill Jacobsen, Henry Heerup and Carl-Henning Pedersen, the film also endeavoured to depict topics such as theatre, architecture and poetry. Thus, the film sought to depict Copenhagen as a city of culture.
