Original brown cloth gilt (some rubbing). Provenance: Herbert and Sarita Ward (ex libris) -- Jonathan Wrobel (ex libris). FIRST EDITION of the principal work on the subject. Mivart, whom Charles Darwin styled the "distinguished biologist", was professor of botany and zoology at Kensington Roman Catholic University College in London and occupied the chair of the philosophy of natural history at the university of Louvain, Belgium. Nissen ZBI 2846.

George Jackson (fl.1830-1864) A saddled black horse in a yard with a river landscape beyond with signature and date 'C.Towne. 179[?]' (on the water trough,lower left) oil on canvas 23 5/8 x 31¾ in. (60 x 80.7 cm.) Provenance with Lane Fine Art, London. Lot Notes Jackson painted a number of fine sporting pictures during hiscareer, including portraits of horses, dogs and dead game. Heexhibited a picture of dead game at the Royal Academy in1844.
