050 Naim iSMAiL 1930 - 1979 Signed, Dated 42 X 31 cm. Watercolor on Paper 1962 Estimate (US$ 2,500 - 3,500) Although the younger brother of Syrian artist Adham ismail, Naim was a prominent painter in his own right, reconfiguring the traditional aesthetic of Arab decorative arts with a modernist sensibility, a painting style that became highly influential. His incorporation of the patterns, geometry and visual rhythms of local textiles, for example, are joined in harmonious colorist compositions that suggest depth and space with sharp lines and multiple planes, giving an illusionist feel in which everyday visual culture is highlighted for its complexity and brought into the realm of fine art. This approach pays homage to the region's rich heritage while seeking to expand its borders. born in Antioch, Syria in 1930, ismail studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts in istanbul, graduating in 1953. After pursuing research in the art of medals and frescoes at private institutions in rome, he eventually returned to Damascus in the late 1950s, where he held a number of significant positions, including the artistic supervisor of the national Army Magazine and the director of Fine Arts in the Ministry of Culture, a post he held from 1970- 79. ismail's work is housed in a number of notable collections, including the National Museum of Damascus and the Syrian Ministry of Culture.

Lot number: 9
Other WORKS AT AUCTIONDescription:
Naim Ismail (Syrian, 1930-1979) Sunrise signed and dated in Arabic (upper centre); signed in Arabic on the reverse oil on canvas 42¾ x 31¾in. (109.5 x 81cm.) Painted in 1963 Lot Notes Much of the population of North Western Syria, a particularly beautiful region at the foot of the Amanous mountains, including the city of Antioch (Antakya/Iskandaron), moved south into Syria following its annexation by Turkey in 1939, a move supported by the French mandate in Syria. Among these migrants were Naim Ismail, only seven years old at the time, and the rest of his family, including and his three older brothers, Adham, Sudki, and Aziz. At sixteen, Adham was already an established artist, and Naim was greatly inspired by him. Unlike his brother's work, Naim's major concern was political, and the freedom of his country was for him paramount. This is clearly evident in his paintings. Naim was a prolific painter, who rendered a perspective employing traditional Arab decorative designs fused with surreal, dreamlike elements to achieve a style of modern art that is distinctly his own.

Naim Ismail - The Newborn

Original 1960

Estimate:

Price:

Lot number: 17
Other WORKS AT AUCTIONDescription:
signed and dated in Arabic twice (upper left and lower left) oil on canvas 32 x 39½in. (81 x 100cm.) Painted in 1960-1972 Lot Notes The subject of this painting is a child, a toddler in an empty road, dwarfed by his surroundings, and beginning his first steps in life. He is watched over by very strong female figures on the one side which protect him, but haunted by dark animals on the other. These creatures include a dark crow (a sinister perching bird in Middle Eastern folklore) and a horse, which may possibly elude to his wish to escape the harsh reality of life under the colonial rule. But between these two opposing forces, the child remains very much alone.
