It shows only minimal signs of age and wear. Under UV-light several touch-ups appear, particularly facial. The framed dimensions measure 29.6 x 26.4 cm, the dimensions of the canvas are 18.5 x 13.5 cm. Jean Baptiste Isabey (1767-1855) In 1977 Jean Baptiste Isabey began his apprenticeship in the studio of historical painter Jean Giradet in Nancy and after further training he joins theAcadémie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1787. After a short time he is incorporated in the studio of Jacques-Louis David and becomes one of his favorite students. He also becomes friends with Francios Gérard, Anne-Louis Girodet and Antoine-Jean Gros. Louis Sicardi introduces him to miniature painting in 1787 and Isabey decides to specialize in this direction. In 1791 he exhibits first drawings and miniatures at the Exposition des Arts Libres of art dealer Pierre Lebrun. His mostly flattering miniatures attract the attention of art lovers and critics. Finally he makes it into the aristocracy circles and creates a series of large-scale, official drawings from 1800-1806. In addition to this a number of miniature portraits originate, which Napoleon gives away as diplomatic presents. He receives several titles, for example ‘peinture du Premier consul’’’’’’’’ and ‘peintre des relations extérieuses’’’’’’’’. Isabey’’’’’’’’s woks can be seen in many museums and public institutions in France, such as Château de Versailles or the Louvre, yet they can also be found in international museums, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Art in New York, the Bomann-Museum in Celle and the Pushkin Museum in Moscow.
