Description:
Lot 1411: Innocenzo Francucci, called Innocenzo da Imola, The Mystical Marriage of Saint Catherine
Innocenzo "da" Imola (1485-1545)
CertificateDr. Fritz Heinemann, undated.Francucci painted this subject several times. In most of these works he locates the figural group, which includes Saint Joseph and the infant Saint John, so close to the edge of the painting that they take up almost the entire image (cf. further examples in the Fototeca Zeri). The green curtain closing the top of the work can almost be regarded as Francucci's trademark, and the smooth texture of the figures' skin and their sharply contoured eyes are comparable to those in other, surely ascribed works by the artist.

Provenance
Major J.M. Ashew; Christie's, London, 17 May 1946, lot 80 (30gns. to Fischer).
The artist is believed to have trained with Francesco Francia inBologna in circa 1508 - an influence that is certainly implied bythe general format of the present picture - and then with MariottoAlbertinelli in Florence for a period between 1510 and 1515. In1517 Innocenzo moved to Bologna, but evidently carried with him theinfluence of Raphael, with whose work he would have become familiarin Florence. Thus, for example, Innocenzo's painted frescoes forthe chapel of the Sacristy of S Michele in Bosco, are imbued with amonumental, classicist accent suggested by Raphael's Ecstasy ofSaint Cecilia (1515; Bologna, Pinacoteca Nazionale), which was inBologna from that time; similarly Raphael's Saint Michael (Paris,Louvre) directly inspired Inocenzo's Virgin in Glory with SaintMichael between Saints Peter and Benedict (1521-2; Bologna,Pinacoteca Nazionale), also painted for S Michele in Bosco.Raphael's influence is similarly evident in the present work, inwhich the poses of the central figures derive closely from those ofthe Bridgewater Madonna (Duke of Sutherland, on loan to theNational Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh). The latter work isdatable to circa 1507, and therefore might have been seen byInnocenzo whilst in Florence.
