Description: KLAUS IHLENFELD (german, b. 1934)/span "TOTEM POLE" Incised with the artist's initials and dated 1967 on the perimeter of the base, un-oxidized phosphor bronze. height: 80 3/4 in. (205.1cm) width: 13 1/4 in. (33.7cm) base: 12 x 12 in. (30.5 x 30.5cm) provenance: /spanThe Artist. Wolfgang & Anita Rapp, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (acquired directly from the above). Condition Report: With some dust accumulation present, the totem pole exhibits some faint scattered dots of oxidation in several areas throughout. Evidence of oxidation is most pronounced at the narrow part of the bottom of the totem pole and within the square base, which also exhibits surface irregularity. There is some minor darker brown surface soiling present in a few places, for example, in the knobs just below and above center and in a few areas in a vertical line between the two. There is some surface irregularity in a few areas and some minor attendant pitting in the surface, for example at upper center. There is a 1/2 inch area of white on the triangular knob at lower left. Otherwise generally in good condition Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. Lot 589 Klaus Karl Otto Ihlenfeld (German/American, b. 1934) Untitled Initialed "KI" on one protrusion. Welded bronze, approximately 10 1/2 in. (26.7cm) diameter. Condition: Minor surface grime. N.B. Ihlenfeld trained at the Hochschule für BildendeKünste in West Berlin from 1950 to 1956, and completedgraduate work with the metal sculptor Hans Uhlmann. Hefirst visited the United States in 1957 for a group show at theNorth Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, and metHarry Bertoia the same year. He worked in the BertoiaStudio for a period, returning to West Berlin in 1958 toopen his own workshop and gallery.
