Description:
Lot 23 NORMAND HUDON CET AGE EST SANS PITIÉ! mixed media on canvas board signed, titled and dated ‘83 22 ins x 28 ins; 55.9 cms x 71.1 cms Provenance: Private Collection, Montreal Note: Known for his humorous, painted commentary of Québécois life, Hudon also unabashedly depicts some hard truths about childhood. In this lot, Hudon shows the flipside of childhood innocence but his playful tact serves as the spoonful of sugar that makes the medicine go down. Snow ball fights, snow forts and other childhood shenanigans are proxies for weighty lessons that must be learned; good versus evil, strong versus weak, cooperation versus isolation. Works such as this go beyond caricature to serve as a character study of childhood itself.

Description:
NORMAND HUDON DIMANCHE MATIN acrylic on masonite signed and titled 12 ins x 24 ins; 30.5 cms x 61 cms Provenance: Le balcon d’’ arts inc., Québec Private Collection, Montreal Note: Born in Montreal in 1929, and after finishing his studies at the École des Beaux Arts in Montreal, Normand Hudon earned a scholarship to study with renowned modernist painter Fernand Leger in France. Working as a cartoonist for various publications in Montreal between 1948 and 1958, it was his work for the French language newspaper Le Devoir from 1958-1961 that has earned him his esteemed reputation. Hudon is known especially for his biting caricatures of Maurice Duplessis, leader of the Union Nationale party; a political faction that was seen by some as the saviour of French culture while to others it was regarded as a bigoted dictatorship. French Canadian, or Quebecois, identity has been a contentious topic in Canadian history since the time of settlement, and the Quiet Revolution which took place in Quebec between 1960-1966 stands out as historically momentous period in which such identity was rethought, strengthened, and to a large extent, modernized. After decades of strict conservatism under Duplessis, the Quiet Revolution was loosely defined as a “catching up” of Quebec society. Inspired by the reform movements taking place around the word, the province underwent rapid social, political and economic transformation; namely an increased separation of Church and state. Dramatic changes worked to bolster self-confidence and foster Quebec nationalism. Hudon experienced these significant developments firsthand, commented on their progress, and played a role in illustrating the changing face of Quebec to the general public.
