Howland (ll) Oil on paperboard 19 5/8 x 31 3/4 inches Provenance: Coe Kerr Gallery, Inc., New York Exhibited: New York, Coe Kerr Gallery, Inc., Alfred Cornelius Howland, 1838-1909 , Feb. 16-Mar. 13, 1971, no. 34, illus. Please note that this work is accompanied by the exhibition catalogue, Alfred Cornelius Howland , (Coe Kerr Gallery, Inc., New York, 1971). This is a finished study for the painting in the collection of the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD. 4 inch vertical scuff in the upper center with some further scuffs in the sky. Some loss to the paper in the upper left edge. 3/8 inch crescent shaped indentation to the board in the grass at the lower center right. There is inpaint in the sky, water, scattered touches in the grass and road, in the lone boy with hat at the center right and the mother and holding her son and daughter at the center left. There are also some touches in the rooftops at the upper left corner.

Small triangular 1/2 inch loss at right edge, 3 inches from bottom; a corresponding patch of paint adheres to the glass. Areas of green are high in sheen and may have been selectively glazed. A small triangular area in the lower right quadrant (near the aforementioned area of loss) may have been compressed in the glazing.
