Holland was born in Burslem to a family of pottery painters and designers. He was an extremely accomplished flower painter, partly as a result of his background knowledge of pottery decoration. In 1819, he came to London and in 1831 (the year after he made the watercolour offered above), visited France where he came under the spell of Bonington, who had died there two years earlier.

Description:
James Holland, O.W.S. (Burslem, Staffordshire 1800-1870 London) The Bridge of Sighs, Venice signed and dated 'J Holland 1841' (lower left) pencil and watercolour with gum arabic and with scratching out 15 7/8 x 11 in. (40.3 x 28 cm.)
Holland first exhibited a view of Venice at the Old Water-Colour Society in 1836, immediately following his first visit to the city. The watercolour was bought by John James Ruskin, John Ruskin's father. Ruskin only made a brief reference to Holland in his writings, as a painter of calm water; however, he first noticed the artist in 1836 and so was presumably refering to his father's watercolour. He continued to paint scenes from Venice, exhibiting numerous views of the city right up until 1869, the year before his death.
