EXHIBITED:
These appear to be smaller contemporary versions of two paintings exhibited at The British Institution 1828 (described as 15 x 17 inches), two paintings bearing the same titles were also exhibited at the Twenty-third Exhibition of the Norfolk and Suffolk Institution for the promotion of the Fine Arts, 1829 No. 43, 48.
PROVENANCE:
Believed purchased from Nightengale's of Elm St., Norwich around the 1920s, thence by family descent.

david hodgson was the son of the drawing master charles hodgson, one of the founder members of the norwich society. he continued his father's practice after his death and became drawing-master at norwich grammar school.

the view of ruins in the bishop's garden is taken from where the bishop's house now stands. between the ruins and the cathedral stands bishop reynolds's chapel
