David Hodgson

David Hodgson (British, 1798-1864) St James's Street, Norwich; Guildhall Street, Norwich; a pair each signed with initials and dated 'D.H. 1827' (lower right), oil on panel 17 x 23cm (6 11/16 x 9 1/16in). each housed within a fine period gilt-gesso frame by Freeman of Norwich. (2) EXHIBITED: These appear to be smaller contemporary versions of two paintings exhibited at The British Institution 1828 (described as 15 x 17 inches), two paintings bearing the same titles were also exhibited at the Twenty-third Exhibition of the Norfolk and Suffolk Institution for the promotion of the Fine Arts, 1829 No. 43, 48. PROVENANCE: Believed purchased from Nightengale's of Elm St., Norwich around the 1920s, thence by family descent.

inscribed in a letter on reverse from john burrell of norwich dated october 4th 1889 "this picture is by d. hodgson and i have very great pleasure in presenting it to r.a. gorrell esq. formerly merchant of this city in kind remembrance of his great attention and liberality to me during the years of the civil war in america." in a w. boswell frame, and a companion, a pair.

including bishop's bridge with the cathedral beyond, the erpingham gate in the cathedral close, ruins in the bishop's garden and the gatehouse - bishop's palace david hodgson was the son of the drawing master charles hodgson, one of the founder members of the norwich society. he continued his father's practice after his death and became drawing-master at norwich grammar school. four, two signed, one l.r.: the view of ruins in the bishop's garden is taken from where the bishop's house now stands. between the ruins and the cathedral stands bishop reynolds's chapel
