Reputedly the founding father of modern equity law, Yorkeenjoyed a long and lucrative legal and political career. Frominauspicious beginnings he rose to become Lord Chief Justice to theKing's Bench in 1733, Lord Chancellor in 1737 and an influentialmember of the Council of Regency. As Lord High Steward he wasresponsible for the abolition of heritable jurisdictions and tartanin Scotland following the Jacobite uprising. He is depicted here inthe robes of the keeper of the Great Seal.

CATALOGUE NOTE
The sitter was the son of Philip Stanhope, 3rd Earlof Chesterfield (1672-1726) and his wife Lady Elizabeth Savile(1674-1708), daughter of George Savile, 1st Marquess ofHalifax.Entering parliament in 1715 as M.P. for St Germans, Stanhope waselevated to the Lords following his father's death in 1726. Between1728 and 1732 he served as ambassador to The Hague and wasinstalled as a Knight of the Garter in 1730. While on diplomaticduty he fathered a son, Philip Stanhope, as a result of a liaisonwith Elizabeth de Bouchet. In 1737 Chesterfield began a thirty yearcorrespondence with his son in an attempt to guide, mentor andtutor him. These letters were published after the Earl'sdeath.Upon his return to England in 1732 he married Petronilla Melusinevon der Schulenburg, Countess of Walsingham (d. 1778), anillegitimate daughter of King George I whose dowry was reported tobe 50,000 guineas. Chesterfield was Lord-Lieutenant of Irelandbetween 1745 and 1746 and Secretary of State between 1746 and 1748,resigning eventually from politics in 1748.
