Howard Hill (American, ac. 1860-77) Bay Horse in a Stable Signed or inscribed "Howard Hill" l.l. Oil on paper mounted to canvas, 12 3/4 x 15 1/2 in. (32.5 x 39.8 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, craquelure, with a seam or stretcher bar mark along top edge, minor abrasions, tack holes, surface grime. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Hill (lr) Oil on canvas 14 x 20 inches Exhibited: Hagerstown, MD, Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, Oct. 1-Nov. 29, 1987 C Wax relined. Frame rubbing. Scattered craquelure throughout. There is some minor scattered touches of inpaint in the sky. A 1/2 inch diameter area of restoration in the grass in the lower right quadrant. There is no further restoration visible under UV light.

Howard Hill (d. 1870) Day's End signed "HHill" lower right oil on canvas, 24 by 30 in. Although he was a popular artist in his time, Howard Hill is now best-known for being Norman Rockwell's (1894-1978) maternal grandfather. This work depicts a hunter cleaning his gun after a successful day of mallard shooting as evidenced by what surrounds him. Hill has paid special attention to the birds, capturing their graceful form and richly-colored plumage. Provenance: Private Collection, Massachusetts
