Herring and dated 1854 (ll) Oil on canvas 16 x 14 1/2 inches Provenance: Frost & Reed, London Connecticut Estate C Estimate $3,000-4,000 (i) Glue relined. Frame rubbing. Inpaint throughout the sky. No other visible inpaint under UV light. (ii) Glue relined. Frame rubbing. Inpaint throughout the sky and scattered in throughout the white horses body. Possible inpaint in the shadows of the doorway of the barn. There is an inpainted area the size of a dime in the upper right quadrant in the top and background of the fourth fence post from the edge. There are a couple of touches in the background in the upper left quadrant. Lot 58 JOHN FREDERICK HERRING THE YOUNGER (british 1815-1907) "THE BLACKSMITH'S SHOP" Signed 'J F Herring' bottom right, oil on canvas 16 1/8 x 24 1/8 in. (41 x 61.3cm) provenance: Christie's New York, sale of December 1, 1999, lot no. 26. Private Collection. Estimate $10,000-15,000 The painting has been glue lined to a linen support to which it is well adhered. The tacking edges remain and the painting appears to have been remounted on its original 4-member, mortise and tenon stretcher. Shallow corner draws and undulations are present. The paint layer exhibits extensive but extremely fine drying crackle and no mechanical or age cracks. There is minor retouching and some reinforcement of shadows in the white horse and the blacksmith's white shirt. Generally in good to very good condition.
