Oil/canvas, 70,5 x 102,5 cm, lo. le. sign. G. E. Hering, slight craquelure, min. rest., relined.- English landscape painter with German ancestors. H. tudied in Munich since 1832 a. began exhibiting at the local Kunstverein as early as 1830. He travelled extensively through Italy a. the the Balkans. After returning to London in 1936 he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy a. at the British Institution, one of his paintings was bought by the prince consort. - Mus.: London (Victoria a. Albert Mus.), Cambridge (Fitzwilliam Mus.), Sheffield, Melbourne. - Lit.: Boetticher, Thieme-Becker, Bénézit.

He later travelled to Rome,
wherehe met John Paget,
a publisher of travel books,
for whom he worked on many illustrations.
Heringreturned to London in 1836 and became a regular exhibitor at theRA,
BI and SS.
After Hering's death,
twosales of his works were held at Christie's,
7th May 1880and 25th April 1881.
