FRANCIS HELPS RBA NPS (1890-1972) Portrait sketch of a Serviceman in the Homeguard signed and dated 'Francis Helps (19)43' (lower right) pencil 12 1/2 x 10 in (31.8 x 25.4cm) Sold with one other portrait sketch by the artist depicting the same sitter; two (2) Provenance: Dorothy King RBA The artist studied at the Slade School of Art under Henry Tonks and Fred Brown. He joined the 1922-24 Everest Expedition as official artist. Between 1931-4 Helps taught at the Royal College of Art, then during World War II he volunteered to be evacuated with it to Ambleside in the Lake District.

‡FRANCIS HELPS (1890-1972) Sherpas and their Mules inscribed 'Tibet 24' (upper right) pencil, pen and ink, coloured chalks and watercolour on paper, unframed 11 1/2 x 14 3/4 in (29.3 x 37.5cm); and four other figure and landscape studies painted in Tibet, 1924. Sold with four other unframed oils by the artist, on board depicting The Chumbi Valley, South Side & Himilayas, Tibet; Forest of Sikkim, cross valley to Chumbi; Sikkim Forest; Near Gangtok, Sikkim; 12 x 14 in (30.5 x 35.6cm and smaller); nine (9) This selection of oil sketches and drawings were produced by Francis Helps on the Mount Everest 1924 Expedition on which he served as official artist. The expedition saw Mallory and Irvine lose their lives close to the summit in June 1924. Help's expedition work was exhibited at the Alpine Club Gallery in 1925 (Exhibition of Paintings and Photographs by Francis Helps and Capt. J.B.L. Noel from the Mount Everest Expedition 1924 ,Jan-Feb 1925). Helps was trained at the Slade School of Art under Henry Tonks and Fred Brown, and served in France with the Artists' Rifles in the Great War. He taught at the Royal College of Art in the 1930's and was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1933
