Alfred Robert Hayward (1875-1971) In a sunlit garden signed 'A. HAYWARD' (lower left) and inscribed 'In a Sunlit Garden'(on the stretcher) oil on canvas 30¼ x 20 in. (76.8 x 50.8 cm.) with Theo J. Gidden, Southport. Auckland, Auckland City Art Gallery (according to a label on thereverse). Lot Notes Hayward studied at the Royal College of Art and the Slade. Hepainted portraits and landscapes, often in an impressionisticstyle, and occasionally in a more mannered technique that revealshis parallel vocation as a mural decorator. Hayward was drawn toriver subjects, which allowed him to experiment with light effects.The present picture may depict his wife, Cecily.
