James Hayllar (1829-1920) Head Study of the Hon. Ethel Lopes signed and dated 'J Hayllar/May 1883' (lower right) oil on paper 9½ x 8 in. (24.2 x 23 cm.) Exhibited Springfield, 1988, no. 62. Newhaven, 1994. Lot Notes James Hayllar is best remembered for an enchanting series ofchild portraits, the first of which, Miss Lily's Carriage Stops theWay, was exhibited in 1866. Prior to that he tutored both Rossettiand Millais. He was also father to a remarkable artistic dynasty,four of whom exhibited alongside him at the Royal Academy. Thesubject of the present portrait, the Hon. Ethel Lopes (d. 1943) wasthe daughter of the 1st Baron Ludlow. For a work by Hayllar's daughter Jessica see lot 71.
