Description:
Dudley Hardy 1866-1922
-Portrait of a figure in wide brimmed hat, bust-length; watercolour, signed and dedicated, 22x17cm:
L A Hammond, early-mid 20thcentury
- Pastoral landscape; watercolour: Note: English painterand illustrator. He studied with his father,T. B. Hardy (1842-97),studied in Dusseldorf, Antwerp and in Paris before returning toLondon. A prolific artist, exhibiting regularly at the RoyalAcademy from 1884 until 1922. His subjects vary from oriental toBreton genre scenes. Other paintings bear a social message, such asSans Asile (1888), depicting huddled figures sleeping in TrafalgarSquare; this work was shown at the Royal Society of British ArtistsGalleries in London in 1893 (after exhibition in other Europeancities) established his reputation. However, it was Hardy'sillustrations and poster art that made his name. His talentscoincided with the boom in illustrated magazines and the power ofthe poster at the turn of the century. The influence of Frenchgraphic style is seen in his fluent line and use of tone, andartists such as Jules Charet influenced the Gaiety Girl series ofposters of the 1890's. The most famous image is the Yellow Girl, which Hardy created to advertise the magazine Today. He designedmany posters for the Savoy Theatre, including those for the D'OylyCarte operas. There is a collection of his posters at the Victoriaand Albert Museum, London. (2)
