Private collection, Carmel, California. Gift from the above. Private collection, Kensington, California. Armin Carl Hansen was a prominent American painter known for his plein-air technique and portrayals of the hardworking seafaring community. Often described as Impressionistic, Hansen refused this label. His style was aggressive and confident, reflecting the intrepidness of his subjects. Born in San Francisco, Hansen received his first art instruction from his father, Herman, a famous painter of Old West and frontier life. From 1903 to 1906 Armin studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute under Arthur Mathews followed by two years at the Royal Academy in Stuttgart, Germany under Carlos Grethe. After engaging in the art communities of Paris, Munich, and Holland, Hansen settled in Nieuwpoort, Belgium working for four years as a crew member on North Sea trawlers and spending his free time painting fishing scenes, maritime seascapes, and the picturesque villages of the coast. Translating his experiences with the resilient and rugged fisher folk into artistic representations, Hansen focused on maritime themes throughout his life. Hansen returned stateside in 1912, taught briefly at UC Berkeley and the following year made his first trip to sleepy Monterey. There he immediately began production of a series depicting the community's fishing industry. He became acquainted with the local fishermen, spending his days sketching along the pier and coastline. Gradually his style evolved expressively, utilizing new perspectives and a deeper palette. Hansen identified with the no-nonsense mentality of fishermen and maintained a modest lifestyle. He resided in an understated studio-home until building a fine Spanish-style home and studio next door to artist Julian Greenwell on El Dorado Street. He lived there until his death on April 23, 1957. During the 1920s, Hansen lived near the Stevenson House, often hosting members of Monterey's avant-garde, including the Society of Six. Lumber Carriers depicts the hustle of industrial docks of the early 20th century. Pictured in various positions of action, broad shouldered dock workers engage in hard labor, hauling lumber off the ship's deck. A sense of strength and tension is created by hard cropping figures and the repetition of diagonal lines juxtaposed with heavy, painterly outlines. His figures are rendered as archetypal masculine mariners– fearless and honorable men of the sea. Only the figure lower center has defined facial features; executed in the same expressive style as the broad green of the port side of the ship. Much of his palette is cool, with muted shades of blues, greens, and smoggy grey, highlighted with hits of toned brick reds and brilliant patches of orange and splashes of bright green. While Hansen preferred an organized composition, he packed the picture plane with the frenetic imagery and energy of his subject. His strong outlines, swathes of color, and long-casted shadows coupled with bold brushstrokes echo humanity's relationship between industry and nature. Hansen's firsthand experience with the life of mariners facilitates his dynamic depiction of the abstract power and intensity in Lumber Carriers .
