Lieutenant J. Hamilton is believed to have been serving aboard the 12-gun cutter-rigged sloop, H.M.S. Rattlesnake during her survey of the Island of Trindadae in 1781 when she was wrecked on 21st October. The crew lived on the island for three months until fortuitously they were taken off by the Bristol which was part of a convoy of Indiamen, which called there in December. This stay would have provided ample time for sketching expeditions made by Hamilton.
