James Guy Evans (American, born circa1810-) The ship John S. McKim in threepositions off the Rio Grande signed lower right: "Evans" inscribed along the bottom: "Steam Ship McKim, off Rio Grande with500 Mississippi Volunteers August 1846, Built by Thomas Clyde1844" oil on canvas 30 x 48 in. (76.2 x 121.9 cm.) The John S. McKim was built in 1844-5 by Reeves & Bros.,and owned by Clyde Steam Ship Co. She had principal dimensions of175ft LOA x 23.2ft beam x 29.0ft draft and weighing 376 tons. Shewas the first American built screw steamer for commercial use inUnited States and was in service between 1844- 1858. She workedprimarily in the Gulf of Mexico as a trade ship, and then duringthe Mexican American war she was used as a transport ship fortroops, specifically in 1846 when she transported 500 troops fromthe Mississippi Volunteers to a conflict off the Rio Grande asnoted in the inscription at the bottom of the painting.
