More Herbert Gurschner (1901-1975), Market Day, Austria, around 1925 Oil on canvas; laid down on plywood panel Austria, around 1925 Herbert Gurschner (1901-1975) – Austrian painter and graphic artist Signed lower left ‘GURSCHNER.’’’’ Overall dimensions: 30.6 x 26.7 cm We would link to thank Roland Widder, estate of Herbert Gurschner, for kindly confirming the authenticity of the painting Provenance: The artist's estate, and thence by descent to private collection Very good condition Gurschner’’’’s paintings were already internationally exhibited in his own lifetime, including the Venice Biennale; the auction record for one of his market scenes currently sets at around €51,500 Around 1925, Herbert Gurschner consequently developed a distinctive New Objectivity style, but without abandoning some expressionist elements of his early works. The present market scene dates back to that period of artistic reorientation. The expressive character is still recognizable, while the architectural elements already suggest his later emphasis on plastic figures. The painting is signed lower left ‘GURSCHNER.’’’’. The canvas is cut along the edges and has been laid down on plywood panel. The work is in very good condition considering the age. The size of the panel is 30,6 x 26,7 cm and the overall framed dimensions are 36.5 x 32.5 cm. Herbert Gurschner (1901-1975) Herbert Gurschner was born in Innsbruck. He started his artistic training in 1917 and completed his studies at the art academy in Munich, between 1918 and 1920. His first exhibitions were organized in Innsbruck. In 1929 he became a member of the Fine Art Society in London and experienced his breakthrough in Britain. He acquired British citizenship at the time of the Second World War and served at the British Army. His later artistic output was mainly focused on stage design. Gurschner/Muhlau/Tirol/1924 on the reverse Oil on canvas 37 1/4 x 31 inches C Frame rubbing. Dirty varnish. Strip relined. There is a 3 x 2 inch L-shaped tear in the canvas at the upper center just above Sebastian's ear. There is a U-shaped tear/dent in the chest of Sebastian, approximately 1 x 2 x 1 inch. There is a 3 inch diameter tear and loss in the lower right quadrant. There are some scattered tiny losses in the lower half of the painting. There is some possible restoration in the upper left register, due to two patches on the reverse. There is some possible inpaint in the chest and face of Sebastian. Dense varnsih, unable to detect further restoration under UV light. There is some visible water damage, only seen on the reverse canvas.

Two tiny punctures at center; small puncture with a 1cm of loss at center right and another one at upper right center; several scattered scuffs and scratches. Scattered craquelure.
