LOT NOTES

Meir Gur-Arieh was born in Bobruisk in 1881 (née Meer Gorodetsky). After his immigration to Palestine in 1909, Meir continued his education at Bezalel Art School, which soon became the cradle of an entire Bezalel school movement. The Bezalel School produced decorative art objects in a wide range of materials, but was especially renowned for ceramic tile work. Single pieces or assembled compositions, Bezalel ceramics combined Asian art traditions with Jugendstil or Art Nouveau. After his graduation, Gur-Arieh stayed at his alma mater to become an instructor of painting and ivory carving. He frequently collaborated with his colleague Ze\`\`\`\`ev Raban on projects commissioned by the city of Jerusalem. They became friends and colleagues, going on to found the Industrial Art Studio together, where they continued to create objects of art in a distinctive style of Bezalel school contiuing after the Academy closed in 1929.
