Gustave Guillaumet (French, 1840-1887) Man on horseback signed 'G Guillaumet' (lower right) oil on canvas 53.5 x 37cm (21 1/16 x 149/16in). Gustave Guillaumet entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1857and began to exhibit regularly in the Salon shortly thereafter in1861. The following year, with an intention to continue his studiesin Rome, Guillaumet impulsively changed his course to North Africa.Although the artist suffered from numerous spells of malaria, thiswould be the first of ten trips to Algeria and Morocco. Inspired by the deserts of North Africa, Guillaumet exhibited the Prière du soir dans le Sahara at the Salon of 1863,which attracted so much attention that it was bought by the stateand is currently owned by the Musée D'Orsay in Paris. This markedthe beginning of the artist's successful career, winning multiplemedals and being given the title Chevalier de la Legiond'honneur . Guillaumet's fascination with Africa intensified as he movedfarther from the cities and closer to the small villages whereethnic lifestyles were untainted by the presence of Europeans. Theregions of Biskra and Hodna were where he spent most of his timeamong the qusurs and labourers of the region. Unlike thelabourers, the present lot shows the strength and dignity of anoble Arab man on horseback.
