Giacomo Guardi (Venice 1764–1835) Veduta dell’’’’Arsenale, gouache on laid paper, 11 x 18 cm, signed and inscribed by the artist “Veduta dell’’’’Arsenale Il Reccapito all’’’’Ospedaletto in Calle del Peruchier al No. 5245 dimandar Giacomo De Guardi” with pen and brown ink on the reverse, browned, foxing and remains of an old mount on the reverse, mounted, framed, (Sch) Provenance: Private collection, Italy. The present gouache is a rare view in the artist’’’’s work. The facade of the Capella Maria Santissima which formerly existed on the right hand side of the bridge near the gates of the Arsenal and was destroyed in 1808 cannot be seen in Guardi’’’’s drawing. The drawing must therefore have been executed after 1808. The attribution to Giacomo Guardi was confirmed by Prof. Filippo Pedrocco on the basis of a photograph.
