A gregarious man who counted many of Gloucester's fishermen among his friends, Gruppé took great delight in setting his easel up in the town and on the harbor, which inspired such works as
Seagulls
. Replete with the soft light of afternoon, the painting underscores Gruppé's skills in translating fleeting natural conditions into paint. Using a deft manipulation of color and form, he captured the brisk salt air of Gloucester, featuring seagulls swooping down to fish left out on a dock, while noting the lively array of lines and shapes that this scene afforded.

, Jul. 10-Aug. 30, 2008
Gruppe painted in a variety of places, including upstate New York, Vermont, and Florida. However, he is associated first and foremost with artistic activity in the Cape Ann towns of Rockport and Gloucester. Notable for its attractive design, perceptive handling of color and forceful technique,
Yellow Dory, Rockport Harbor
underscores his skills in conveying natural effects in relation to the maritime environment. At the same time, the painting reveals his ability to capture the look and spirit of Rockport, the bustling fishing port that played such a vital role in his repertoire of subjects.

Emile Gruppe Retrospective
, Oct. 5-Nov. 23, 2008
Born in Rochester, New York, Emile Gruppe studied in New York City and in Paris. After settling in Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1925, he focused on portraying the town's bustling harbor and sunlit shores, never missing a day of painting. Fish House, Cape Ann exemplifies his Impressionist-inspired aesthetic, revealing his ability to evoke nuances of light and atmosphere with a subtle range of colors and bold, vigorous brushwork. The fishing shack perched on a precarious dock and the beached and anchored boats in this scene provided him with an opportunity to use his brush with energetic directional strokes, creating an allover surface design.
