The collector, of Dutch descent, began collecting in the 1970s with a primary focus on works by American artists painting in the Netherlands as well as American Impressionism and Maritime scenes. Gruppé" l.r., identified on a presentation plaque, titledand inscribed on a hand-written label affixed to the back of theframe, with labels from Pierce Galleries, Inc., Hingham, MA, and IrwinBraun, Inc., New York, NY, affixed to the frame backing. Oil on canvas, 36 3/16 x 40 1/8 in. (91.8 x102.0 cm), in a period frame. Condition: Lined, paint losses, craquelure, surface grime. Estimate $5,000-7,000 Hand-written label affixed to the frame, presumedto be in the artist's hand, reads "Incoming Tide/At BassRocks Mass/Near Gloucester/Chas P. Gruppe."
