Gruber Béla heritage stamp on the reverse Béla Gruber had a lot of followers already during his lifetime. Nowadays more and more studies and books are published on his life and work. The Barges is one of the studies which prepared his Painter's Atelier ; this latter picture was mentioned by a critic as one of the greatest enterprises of Hungarian painting. The Barges meant to be his diploma piece but it remained unfinished. However, the huge canvas representing the painter's life and existence, his inner and outer world in one composition is a valuable piece of Hungarian painting. In the middle of the Painter's Atelier a picture representing barges appears. It alludes to the years Gruber spent in a ship factory in Buda, where his talent was discovered. During the years spent at the art school he visited Aurél Bernáth's and János Kmetty's classes. Though he began to paint in the style of Bernáth's early works, his art was not pseudo-archaic at all; the composition, the layers of the planes, the piled forms and the strong colors were all arranged by individual artistic principles. This is compression, but not forms piled up arbitrarily; crowdedness, but with an organic wholeness of the structure. The strong spatiality is formed by fine moving of planes. The colors are deep, the paint is palpable and massively thick on the surface. This materialism, the presence of the factual world in the picture is in fact a pure abstraction: the real world is one with the painting, reality appears in the picture, the Painter's Atelier is the reduced version of macrocosm, but this Part re-creates the Whole. Gruber was able to feel the harmony of life and art and the representation of this feeling was a tension and its détente at the same time.
