Keith Alastair Griffin (b.1927) The jute clipper Slieve Roe in coastal waters signed 'K.A. Griffin.' (lower left) oil on canvas 14 x 20 in. (35.6 x 50.8 cm.) Lot Notes The three-masted iron full-rigger Slieve Roe was ordered for thefamous Sinclair fleet of so-called 'colonial clippers' owned byJames Sinclair of Tyrone, Ulster. Built by Harland & Wolff atBelfast in 1878, she was registered at 1,749 tons gross (1,668 net)and measured 257 feet in length with a 38½ foot beam. The last ofthree identical sisters, Slieve Roe proved the fastest of the trioalthough it was said at the time that the 'Slieves' were the finestsailing ships ever to be launched from Harland & Wolff's yards.On a passage out to Calcutta in 1883, Slieve Roe raced 1,500 milesin five days and averaged 16 knots for one stretch of 23½ hours.Sold to Simpson Bros. towards the end of the century, hersuccessful career continued when she set a 28-day record betweenMelbourne and Callao (Chile) under their colours and remained inservice with them until broken up in 1910.
