Description:
The three woodcuts are from the series ‘Totentanz von Basel’’’’, which comprises a total of 40 woodcuts in colors. The sheets present here are titled ‘Der Kardinal’’’’ (Fürst 66/6), ‘Der Krüppel’’’’ (Fürst 6/21) and ‘Der Schultheiß’’’’ (Fürst 66/28). The series was issued in several editions of up to 3333 copies. The three unsigned woodcuts in colors are each typographically titled in the print lower right. The sheets show slight signs of age and wear with occasional creases. One sheet bears additionally a tiny tear (0.5 cm) in the lower edge, another shows minor darkness along the edges. Overall the condition is good. The images measure from 26.1 x 18.7 cm to 30 x 20.2 cm, the sheets 38.2 x 25 cm HAP Grieshaber (1901-1981) The German painter and printmaker HAP Grieshaber studied in Stuttgart, London and Paris printmaking and calligraphy. From 1955 onwards he taught at the art academy in Karlsruhe, yet gave up his post out of protest five years later: his students’’’’ works were seen as too abstract and triggered a public debate. Grieshaber was honored with numerous prizes and his works were seen at various documenta exhibitions. From a total edition of 2000 copies, including 200 and 6 artist proofs with the imprint ‘Für Grafik der Welt’’’’, Nuremberg 1971 Foundation Grieshaber to the catalog. Condition: The sheet is mounted on the upper edge (reversible) and framed by a mat. The paper is minimally toned, faint handling creases in the upper margins, weak crease in the lower left corner, small tear in the lower right margin, otherwise overall of very good impression.
