Not relined; painting is somewhat hard to read with clarity under u.v. light because of extensive varnish inconsistencies. Overall, the painting is in generally good condition, with minor abrasions to three of the four outer edges (which appear darker under u.v. and thus may also have some associated minor retouch). There is some localized retouch, including a spot on figure's hand, a minor amount above and below index finger and to small amounts of figure's dress and foreground. Additionally, there is minor retouch to a spot just above corner of figure's right eye and possibly some retouch to teeth. We note that under u.v. light there are two squarish areas that are darker than surrounding areas: one at neck, one at elbow. It appears that these are 'test' areas that have been selectively cleaned, the varnish having been removed.
Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. CATALOGUE NOTE
Maria showcases Luis Graner y Arrufi's remarkable abilityto convey the effects of sunlight, here seen pouring through aforest canopy onto a young girl in a simple white dress. Graner wasborn in Barcelona in 1863 and at the age of twenty-three wasawarded a scholarship from the Barcelona Provincial Council tostudy in Paris. The artist was drawn into the art circles of thethriving French capital, and he remained there for five years, exhibiting at the Paris Salon and winning numerous medals acrossEurope. Graner moved to the United States in 1910, and some of hisearliest recorded works in America include paintings of theCalifornia coast. Between 1914 and 1922, Graner lived in NewOrleans, and created many scenes of rural Louisiana. He ultimatelymoved to New York and opened a studio, creating images of thevibrant city's famous sites, including Central Park, the BrooklynBridge, and the Hudson River. Graner finally returned to Barcelonalater in life, where he died in May 1929.
