JOHN GOULD (1804-1881) A Synopsis of the Birds of Australia and the Adjacent Islands. London: by the Author, 1837-38. 4 parts in one volume, 8° (270 x 183mm). 73 hand-coloured lithographic plates by and after Elizabeth Gould, with 8pp 'Description of New Species of Australian Birds' at end. (Small crease and tear to title, occasional light spotting and offsetting.) Original green half morocco, gilt spine, gilt edges. Provenance: Sir Edmund Giles Loder, 2nd Baronet (1849-1920), bookplate; unidentified blind-stamp on title-page; Chas. J. Sawyer, bookseller's ticket). FIRST EDITION OF GOULD'S FIRST WORK ON AUSTRALIAN BIRDS. 'Many [of the birds] were genera and species new to science... the colored [sic] plates, the bases, of the text, are beautifully drawn' (Wood). The work was issued in four parts between January 1837 and April 1838. Ferguson 2271; Nissen IVB, 382; Sauer 5; Wood p.364; Zimmer p.254.
