Affortunato Gory (Italian, fl. 1895-1925) A North African Huntsman signed 'A. Gory' with applied brass plate inscribed 'Marrocain/ReisFilhos/Porto' Gilt-bronze and white marble with mottled-yellow marble base 25 in. (63.5 cm.) high Born in Florence, Affortunato Gory initially studied at thecity's Accademia di Belle Arti under Augusto Rivalta. Settling inParis at the beginning of the 20th century, he completed histraining under Victorien-Antoine Bastet, before going on to exhibitat the Salon until the start of the First World War. An exponent ofchryselephantine sculpture, Gory used varying combinations ofmarble, ivory, gilt and patinated bronze. Given that he specialisedpredominantly in busts and statuettes of young women; the presentchoice of subject is rare.
