(212 x 278 mm.); and designs for a stage set by Pasquale Antonio Michele and for a colonnaded building by G. di Rosso (3) Lot Notes Another version of this design by Gonzaga is in the Hermitage, Saint Petersburg, where it is described as a design for the stage curtain of La Fenice, Venice (M.T. Murano, Scenografie di Pietro Gonzaga, exhib. cat., Venice, Cini Foundation, 1967, no. 96).

Pietro Gonzaga (1751-1831) Two designs for the stage: The courtyard of a palace; and Thefortified moat of a castle inscribed 'Dio ti vede' and dated '1814' (1) and respectivelynumbered '43' and '30' pen and brown ink, brown and grey (1) wash 7¾ x 13½ in. (198 x 342 mm.)a pair (2) Provenance A Russian framer's label.An unidentifed collector's seal'MR'. Anon. sale; American Art Association, New York, 27-8 March 1930,lot 89 (part of a lot of three drawings). Lot Notes Gonzaga worked as a stage designer at the Teatro della Scala,Milan, before moving to Saint Petersburg in 1793. There he designedstage decorations for the Imperial Theatre. The two presentdrawings were executed during the artist's Russian period and havea Russian provenance. A drawing by Gonzaga similar in size andstyle was with Flavia Ormond, Italian Old Master Drawings, NewYork, 1997, no. 14.
