DESCRIPTION signed and inscribed Ch.s Giron Paris lower right oil on canvas PROVENANCE Giron Collection Sale: Sotheby Parke Bernet, London, 22 November 1978, lot 79 EXHIBITED Paris, Salon des Champs-Elysées, 1883, no. 1060, p.221, illustrated Berne, Musée des Beaux-Arts, Charles Giron , 1955, no.9 LITERATURE AND REFERENCES Simone Giron, Charles Giron , Geneva, 1955, p. 10,discussed; p. 11 & 13, illustrated CATALOGUE NOTE Giron's vast canvas Les deux soeurs reveals the artistas a great nineteenth-century painter of modern life. Suffused withmyriad cultural, political and social undertones, the painting isalmost Zolaesque in its depiction of an argument between twosisters in the street – the lower middle-class mother of threepointing her finger accusingly at the younger sister who is passingby in a horse-drawn landau, with all the elegant refineries andsilk frou-frous of the fashionable Parisian cocotte. In an influential essay entitled 'The New Painting' art criticEdmond Duranty had insisted in 1876 on eliminating the divideseparating the artist's studio from that of everyday life, urgingartists to introduce the 'reality of the street' into theircompositions. In Les deux soeurs Giron took up Duranty'schallenge. By capturing everyday life in Paris withoutidealisation, picturesqueness or sentimentality, the present workreflects the early work of French Impressionist painters likeDegas, Manet, Caillebotte and Béraud. The scene takes place in the Place de la Madeleine, near Giron'sstudio. Eight horses and twenty-seven figures are caught up in thistumultuous study of modern morals and traditions. Though atrenchant and topical image made in the heart of Frenchcivilisation, the work betrays a touch of Spanish temperament;traces of Goya's work can be seen in the young boy pulling arickshaw between the carriage wheels, and the shimmering palette ofVelázquez is visible in the vibrant bouquet of the flowervendor. Charles Giron entered the studio of Menn in Geneva against hisparents' wishes. Aged twenty-two he left for Paris, where he becamea pupil of Alexandre Cabanel. He started exhibiting at the ParisSalon from 1876 onwards and initially made a name for himself as anaccomplished portrait painter. However, Giron's real artisticbreakthrough came in 1883, when he exhibited the present work atthe annual Salon to great success.
